Benefitting Our Neighbors in Durham and Orange Counties During Unprecedented Times

Due to recent unexpected changes in our federal government, our neighbors in this community are no longer receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. More than 1.4 million North Carolinians rely on SNAP to supplement their food budget. This loss will create real hardship for our neighbors who are already struggling to put food on the table. To help fill the gap, we are launching a November Food Donation Drive.

CGS members Laura Dille and Rachel Betts are coordinating this Food Donation Drive on behalf of CGS. Please contact Rachel with questions or to volunteer.

There are three ways to participate:

TABLE

CGS member Laura Dille is Director of Operations at TABLE, an Orange County non-profit that distributes fresh and healthy non-perishable food directly to children enrolled in its program. Currently, TABLE is delivering food to 1,130 children per week in Orange and Durham counties, with a waitlist of 300. It is expected that the waitlist will grow.

You can donate funds directly to TABLE. Or you can purchase food via TABLE’s Amazon wish list.


Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina

The Food Bank has served as a hub for food distribution to 700 food pantries across this part of North Carolina for 45 years. They provide monthly grocery boxes to seniors and provide food directly to children through school programs.

You can donate directly to the Food Bank.


Food Collection at CGS

If you prefer to donate non-perishable food items, such as canned goods, rice, pasta, peanut butter, and shelf-stable milk, please drop them off in the Narthex where you see the signs. See below for a list of the most-needed items:

Canned Items

  • Fruits (peaches, pears, oranges, pineapple, fruit cups, etc.)
  • Vegetables (tomatoes, green beans, carrots, corn, yuca, etc.)
  • Meats (chicken, salmon, tuna, pork, etc.)
  • Beans (pinto, black, kidney, cannellinis, chickpeas, baked beans, etc.)
  • Soup (tomato, beef stew, chicken noodle, sopas de fideo, etc.)
  • Dairy (evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, media crema, coconut milk, etc.)

Dry Goods

  • Cereal & Oatmeal
  • Pastas (spaghetti, mac and cheese, bowtie, etc.)
  • Rice (brown, white, wild, instant, etc.)
  • Lentils (green, red, brown, etc.)
  • Nut butters (peanut, almond, hazelnut spread, etc.)
  • Nuts, seeds, trail mix, and granola bars
  • Baking (flour, maseca, cocoa, cajeta, sugar, etc.)
  • Oils (olive, canola, vegetable, corn, etc.)
  • Herbs and Seasonings (pepper, cumin, garlic, onion, paprika, italian, Knorr suiza, adobo, chicken bouillon, oregano, salt, cinnamon, chili powder, turmeric, etc.)
  • Dried Fruit (raisins, apricots, Craisins, prunes, etc.)
  • Dried Beans (pinto, black, chickpeas, split peas, etc.)
  • Beverages (instant tea, coffee, drink mixes, juice, water, shelf-stable milk, etc.)

Food donations will be delivered weekly by CGS volunteers to TABLE and the Food Bank to support families in need.

Let’s come together as the hands and feet of Christ, sharing our resources with those who need them most.
