Join us for prayer at the start of each class. Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for what God wants us to learn each week.

Session 1: January 11, 18, 25, February 1, 8

Baptism and the Lord’s Supper – Bob Burns, S212
Why do Presbyterians (and others) baptize babies? What is happening in the Lord’s Supper. Though part of the Theological Foundations course, this class is open to all.
1 Peter, Part 2 – Mark Whipple and Andrew Carlson, S203-204
Mark and Andrew pick up in 1 Peter where they left off in October. But if you didn’t come to the first part, no worries! There is a lot to explore about living winsomely as outsiders in our own culture.

Session 2: February 15, 22, March 8, 15, 22,29

St. Matthew’s Passion – Greg Wheatley, Ryan Barnhart, and Mark Whipple, S212
Widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of Baroque sacred music, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote this oratorio, based on Matthew 26-27, in 1727. Greg, Ryan, and Mark will walk us through the Biblical text and the music that reflects it as we prepare for Easter.

Presbyterianism – Chris Garrett, S202
At CGS our priority is to be disciples of Christ. But there are good and Biblical reasons why we are part of a Presbyterian denomination. Come and explore these with us.

Session 3: April 19, 26, May 3, 10, 17

Life 360: Impacting the Durham/Chapel Hill Community – Aaron McKethan and Rachel Betts, S212
We will look at five critical areas of local mission where CGS can become more involved: Durham Rescue Mission, World Relief, Durham/Chapel Hill Public Schools, Reality Ministries, and Foster/Adoption Ministries and Respite Care

The Doctrine of Salvation – Todd Rust, S206
All of us are grateful that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son.” But there is a lot to unpack behind these words. Todd walks us through key ideas behind salvation, like Faith, Election, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, and Substitutionary Atonement.

The Great 8: Romans 8 – Steve Jones, S202
The Puritans called this chapter “The Great 8” because it speaks into every aspect of our life in Christ: our justification by faith alone, our growth in the faith, the work of the Holy Spirit, and our adopted sonship. Amazing breadth and encouragement in 39 verses!
